Smack! After the slap the colours make our heads spin. Like a dub from the echo room. Do we see new-discovered rock paintings, escaped from an unknown Creation narrative, drifting in time, meant to welcome the gods? The recognition is total – this is us. We also recognize the coincidence, the innocence, the arbitrariness – that's us too. Just before doubt spoils our temper, there are those colours. Bigger, clearer, better (than us). Smack!

Pats! Pats!

In a crisscross of areas and patterns figures secure themselves a place. Not weightless they detach themselves from the background but threaten to disappear back into it again. The observation makes the image stagger in Anuli Croon's work. Form and meaning vie for victory and interfere with the viewer's tendency to interpret. No loser, no winner. In Croon's universe the artist's hand reigns: order reigns.

decorative playfulness and profundity

Anuli Croon's colourful, severely structured paintings automatically activate the beholder's reservoir of associations: images and impressions of mysteriousness, ambiguity, references to primitive art, comic characters and commercials, everyday household items, fabric patterns and universal symbols for human gestures and body language are just a few of the elements of her imagery.

On closer consideration, however, more signs of ambiguity pop up in the image: does the one figure in the series 'Mug & City' wrap his arms around the other to protect him or do we see the very opposite, a kind of hostile stalking, enforcing subjection? The word 'mug' in the title seems to refer to an unpleasant character, but at the same time the colourful, schematically represented faces of the figures call forth more amiable associations. All these paradoxical qualities of openness and mysteriousness, of decorative playfulness and profundity are typical of the work of this remarkable painter.

ALONG

We recognize everything in Anuli Croon's large, clear paintings. The hands, eyes, buildings and ornaments are lovingly meticulous, but at the same time unsettling in their anonymity. We recognize everything and yet we go astray among the figures and the fragments of a metropolis. And then, disorientated, we see the beautiful composition, the intense colour patterns and the texture.

LANGSHEEN

Rijnstate Zevenaar has been enriched by as many as three wall paintings at one stroke. You will find this 'one-two-three', created by Rotterdam-based artist Anuli Croon, on the ground floor, in the direction of the lifts. It begins at the outpatients' blood test department, where we see the start of a pattern. At the stairwell this structure even fills the entire wall, only to return as the base in a colourful final piece, at the side of the lifts – a composition of human figures, hands, trees and patterns.

DIY

In the human figures, made up of colourful areas, facial expressions are not filled in. Anuli Croon does this deliberately to keep interpretations as open as possible. The wall painting DIY visualizes a simplified version of reality, as in comic books or cartoons. The varied, but nonetheless balanced use of colours, from soft pink to aluminium, together with the graphic, hand-painted patterns have ensured that the wall painting now has a natural, prominent place in the building. Even the coats, scarves, jerseys and bags of passers-by belong to this scene. For a brief moment all seems to be quite orderly.

DIY (Do It Yourself/ Doe het zelf)

SILENT WITNESSES

Anuli Croon paints in the vein of the cartoon. The work is extraordinarily colorful. The work looks simple without simplistic. The two-dimensional representation conforms wholly to the flat plane of the canvas or the wall. The coloration is mostly clear and primary. The paintings pairs analysis with intuition. They enable the viewer to riddles. Their cartoonish simplicity is deceptive. Where a story leads to a denouement, Anuli Croon keeps her plot cunningly hidden in a mix of hands, eyes, buildings, interiors and ornaments. People make their appearance as silent witnesses of unexplained affairs; they give text nor explanation. Yet they are clearly constructed with a loving touch. That alone protects them for the anonymity of the crowd.

STOMME GETUIGEN

Hun  eenvoud is bedrieglijk.

Anuli Croon's paintings are powerful and colourful. The persons are frame-filling – there is no way of getting round them. The figures have little or no facial expression, which emphasizes their actions. That way they can evoke strong emotions while being distant and aloof themselves. You see a lot of hands, and those hands are grasping or holding on. It is unclear whether that is out of love or not – it is up to the viewer to interpret it with his own views.

The work is flat and spatial at the same time. Figure and interior are merging. A first impression as to where man stops and space around him begins may well be false. She builds her compositions by means of stamps, stencils and the use of masking tape. Her colourful patterns and bright colours sometimes call to mind printed fabrics from Africa – abstract and narrative at the same time.

At times patterns and figures from real life seem to melt into one another in the painting and vice versa. Anuli Croon paints a play with inside and outside; subject and image are both layered – like life itself. Directly and inescapably.

An overview of the fourth 100 acquisitions for the DELA art collection

A publication of DELA Kunstzaken, November 2017

CONFUSION

A friend of mine has two paintings by Anuli Croon on the wall. Every time when I am visiting, I enjoy looking at them. There are strange figures in them.

They are made up of several layers that seem to have shifted in relation to each other, like cut-out pieces of paper. The way Croon succeeds in fascinating me through the tension she puts into her work is very clever. She creates confusion because her style of painting seems so impersonal, whereas the figures she realizes have such distinct characters. In her presentation at Steendrukkerij Amsterdam she shows paintings and prints. I am looking forward to her new work.

VERWARRING

EXPLORATIVE AND INTUITIVE

Anuli Croon’s paintings are defined by patterns and geometric shapes, which through their colour and structure force the viewer to read the image carefully. By using paint roller, masking tape and stencils the patterns look neutral and clear-cut; but at the same time it is obvious that the image as a whole is built up in an explorative and intuitive manner.

As it turns out after an initial exploration, the patterns can also be conceived as architectural spaces, where several directions of view and perspectives co-exist in a painting. This way Anuli Croon makes us get out of our conditioned way of looking, offering us the opportunity to observe in a new, unbiased fashion.

In Anuli Croon's work a shift has taken place when it comes to the emphasis in the painting. Initially human characters featured in her work which – like the interiors in this exhibition – are flat, without perspective or central focal point, and are highly simplified.

For some time now it is the interiors themselves that demand our attention. The collages and paintings on view at Gallery Berendsen are stripped of 'interior accessories': it is the space itself that opens and closes. All the walls, doors, pillars, openings are made up of patterns that have a deceptive optical effect in relation to one another.
Our gaze seeks what is in front, what is open or closed, but can never be sure. The hand-drawn patterns are never found more than once in the work, which creates a dizzy variation in language.

Maartje Berendsen, Rotterdam 2007

Maartje Berendsen, Rotterdam 2007

POP SCHOOL...

Rento Brattinga galerie  is hanging the work of Anuli Croon who merges the elements of Pop School with geometric/abstraction. The colors tend to be strong and the "figurative" imagery more simple than that of a comic strip. Sometimes even the figurative comes across as a geometric - abstraction. She also has series on paper. Croon uses a stencil to create compositions which are all geom - abst that are sometimes contradictions to the style.  The crowning piece in this exhibition is a large canvas (170 x 250 cm) which asserts itself magnificently: figurative and sort of abstract, great color contrast. Its got everything.

ANULI CROON

Patterns of Life / Levenspatronen

Made in Rotterdam 1999–2015

Paintings, works on paper and commissions by Dutch artist Anuli Croon (b. 1964) in Rotterdam between 1999 and 2015 fill the pages of this handsome, densely illustrated monograph. Brilliantly colored geometric shapes cover her large canvases, creating graphic depictions of people and places. Croon’s use of flat one-dimensional shapes for depicting her subject matter accentuates her bold forms and colors and creates a pop art–like feeling with reference to 1990s graphic designers and artists Mike Mills, Will Sweeney and the noted Geoff McFettridge. Contributing essays by Vera Illés, Aat Ceelen, Maarten Janssen and Dees Linders describe and provide insight into Croon’s large, clear paintings in which figures and fragments of a metropolis meticulously rendered in intense color, patterns and texture are unsettling in their anonymity.
