IN YOUR FACE  by André van Dijk

In Patterns of Life / Levenspatronen  an overview of  the oeuvre of Rotterdam-based artist Anuli Croon, man becomes a desperate character in a limited space. What prevails here is staying on your feet and holding on to each another as a fundamental survival strategy.

It is the silence in Anuli Croon's work that may at the same time be called deafening. Where the shapes in the large paintings seem to relate to the viewer in utter silence, the arrangements of colours fill the painted space in noisy compositions. The reigning silence is especially emphasized by human figures peopling the plane and confirming the soundlessness with empty heads.

Anonymity

The canvas Mug & City IV shows two figures, one holding the other in a kind of Heimlich manoeuvre. The unresisting attitude of the person in front is in contrast with the firm grip of the back one. Do we witness a life-saving embrace or a struggle of antagonists? In a penetrating way, Croon shows how tranquil situations may well turn into confusing scenes. The apparent apathy of her characters may equally well have arisen from love as from struggle.

More than anything else, it is the absence of facial expression that intensifies the detached atmosphere. Heads without eyes, mouth or nose, seem to retreat into an anonymity that makes you wonder whether these people care about one another in any case. Arms and hands, by contrast, are omnipresent. There is an excessive degree of touching, holding and embracing, suggesting that this is a world beyond sensory communication that has to do with mere physical advance.

Film strips

Croon's stern way of painting makes her technical method of working easily identifiable. The compositions built up with the help of stencils and stamps are usually placed in front of a decor of exuberant patterns reminding one of film strips flashing by. The stir in the background isolates the stilled humanity, causing the different layers in this work to converge in a strained, but consequently fascinating overall picture.

Even when Croon chooses not to depict human figures and instead creates her compositions in a purely abstract manner – as in Architectural Construction VI – the stratification of the surface demonstrates an exceptional quality. The taut representations and interplay of lines as well as the colourful patterns render an obviously architectural atmosphere to these works. The 'built' spaces are enclosed by beautifully decorated wall planes and offer a through-view to other spaces. It is an interplay of structure, light and rhythm played by the artist in a truly virtuoso fashion, which is likewise reflected in her three-dimensional work.

Claustrophobic

A few photographs in this edition show particularly well how Anuli Croon's works relate to the spaces where they are exhibited. The huge human figures and masks fill the rooms with a monumental atmosphere in their all but claustrophobic framing. Grievous facial expressions and fumbling hands reaching out are crowding round the framework within which the artist has incarcerated them.

That effect tends to vanish largely due to the robust imposition of this booklet. The narrow margins and bold positioning of the separate paintings, with little white around, leaves hardly any environment to experience the unusual spatiality of the works. It is up to the viewer to distance himself and create his own interspace. More than enough reason to go and have a close look at Croon's art.

Filmstroken

Croons strakke schilderwerk maakt haar technische werkwijze direct herkenbaar.
